Seventeen years ago Neda Finley decided to become a florist although she had never sold flowers before or put together a professional flower arrangement. In fact, she can only say that she had a calling to become a florist and did so on July 1, 1993 when she left the family business, the Oasis Restaurant and Motel, on the south end of town and headed for the north end to become the new owner of Flowerland. She purchased the business from owners Ruben and Eleanor Lopez, who helped her get started by carrying the loan. They also gave her several months of apprenticeship training in order to learn the business, a real service that is not seen often in today’s world. During the first year as the new Flowerland owner, she also took floral classes in Denver and became FTD certified in weddings. Her decision to follow her calling has provided the community with a thriving business that caters to every occasion, including weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, funerals, proms, baby showers, homecomings, and any other occasion for sending or giving flowers. It was a decision Neda did not take lightly. And, in order to keep up with the latest trends and styles, she and her staff continue to attend workshops and trainings that are scheduled throughout the region.

Staff members, Kathryn and DebbieOf course, the skill and training in arranging flowers, gift baskets, and corsages are very important, but Neda knows that the number one reason for her success is the superb customer service that she and her staff provide.

“We are very service oriented,” Neda explains. “We continue to have quarterly staff meetings to discuss how to treat our customers. We ask questions to fit the need of our customers. We also request that our customers let us know if there is a problem. We appreciate feedback from them.” Neda goes on to explain that she and her staff believe that it is extremely important to acknowledge every customer as they enter the flower shop, and to let them know that they are there for any help the customer may need, or to answer questions that the customer may have.

Flowerland has two employees, Debbie Trujillo, who has been with Neda since November 1994, and Kathryn Cardenas, a more recent hire, but who has been with Flowerland for the past two years. Between the three of them, the busy shop continues to provide great customer service while taking care of their floral and gift needs, either in the store, or by delivering the beautifully created arrangements.

Flowerland was recently named as Raton's Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month because of the many years of doing business in Raton, and because of the caring staff and owner. Flowerland has also been named as the Best Place to Buy Flowers in Raton by the Raton MainStreet organization.
